Sridevi Kicks the Bucket: Karma Plays its Role

Another wonderful Indian actor has passed to the other realm. May her soul rest in peace.

Whichever movies Sridevi acted in, she left her mark. But, somehow, her stint in Tamil cinema seem to stand out for her dusky genuine vulnerability which made the public connect with her and her performances. I didn’t seem to think so until I married my husband. My first movie of Sridevi was a Bollywood one and, over the years I saw her in innumerable Hindi movies. It was only when I started watching old movies/film songs of Sridevi in Tamil did I realize what we had lost of the original Sridevi.

Acting to Sridevi was a natural act just like breathing, obviously since she had begun acting while still a child. In her  youth she blossomed further into a natural actor.

And then, Bollywood happened. Kamal had tried it before in Ek Duje ke Liye, Sagar but had failed. Where he had failed Sridevi succeeded. But, oh what a price she paid for it! Maybe, if Kamal had attempted to do some cosmetic surgery he would have succeeded. He did of course leave his beautiful wife Vani Ganapathy to get hooked to Bollywood actress Sarika. But, that did not help him get a foothold in Bollywood. So, you know now, how much fair skin, cosmetic surgery and getting hooked with Bollywood actors (the entire package) is needed to get into Bollywood and all that jazz!

And then, a Bengali Babu Moshai, Mithun Chakravarthy stepped into Sridevi’s life. Utter bliss. Candlelight dinners, clandestine relationship followed. They were the talk of the town. Inseparable.

But, Mithun Dada was married. She became his second wife but not for long. Mithun Dada’s wife threatened suicide and the couple separated only for Sridevi to seek support from her co actor Anil Kapoor’s director brother,  THE Boney Kapoor who was incidentally her Rakhi brother.

Things moved fast. Brother became paramour and the rest that followed is history.

Boney left his wife for Sridevi. His wife Mona Kapoor drowned her grief in cancer and just before she was to see her son Arjun Kapoor become actor, she crossed the mortal borders.

Karma today has played its role. It never judges anyone.

Sridevi passed away before she could see her daughter become actor.

Just like Mona Kapoor.

The tinsel world is insensitive, glamorously ruthless, the spotlights blinding the eyes of all that fall within its radius.

Mourn as I do the loss of such a fine actor I also pray for the daughters of Sridevi to deal with this tragedy.

Hope they have the courage just like their step brother and step sister did when their mother left.

  1. Doubt, if any one can write better.
    Not likely,until i read another.
    Challenge,can not -may not.
Worth dying, just to merit a Piece like this.
Wonder, the way you weave the tapestry -of truth, fiction, fantasy, imagination & wordcraft.
    Poignant,yet,prose at its best.
Keep writing -enriching Prode & * enlivening*

  2. Wonderful narration. An experience in reading. I am aware of the talent in Mrs OM but this is unimaginable.
Pl keep wruting. God bless you

  3. I know almost nothing about Bollywood and care less. Nor am I even capable of recognising Sridevi in a lineup. But I would like to know exactly what kind of *productive* work she and her husband ever did in their lives that they had money enough to fly back and forth from Dubai to Mumbai and back on a whim.
