The Female Saga

Obama and Michelle

Seeing her dancing with the children while on her current visit to India, I was really enthralled by this First Lady of the United States who seems different from most other First Ladies.

Tempted as I am to write about the simply smashing and verbally impressive Barack H. Obama, I think I’d better save the world of another Obama impressed article. Woman that I am, I prefer to talk about the woman behind the President. The credit of Obama’s success as a man, a politician and now a changeover President goes entirely to him. That is for sure. But, somewhere next to him, maybe, just beside him lies a woman whose contribution to the present US President’s success is by no means less.

Here stands a woman, black by race, an unexpected candidate for First Lady whose colour rather than her academic qualifications or her cool and strong willed nature keeps the public guessing.

‘What does she have in her that makes her qualify for such a high post?’ This question even today runs in most people’s minds. In fact, it has even been a matter of speculation in many debates and television shows during the Presidential campaign. Somehow, just before the President entered the White House people realized that Michelle was no ordinary woman. A lawyer by profession, she has a mind of her own but prefers to not use it to build probable political ambitions quite unlike Hillary Clinton who permitted her professional desires to dominate her personal life. 45-year-old Michelle is the youngest First Lady since Jacqueline Kennedy. People are looking up to her, wanting to see how she projects herself in a world known for its unjust prejudices against colour and race.

Introduced as ‘my rock’ by Barack Obama on stage, she is the woman who keeps him fixed on the goals he has set before his country and himself. Known to call a spade a spade, Michelle has all the attributes that make a successful First Lady. Those hands around Obama are one of a lifetime support and commitment for a man she considers strong enough to lead a troubled nation. Those hands are there to comfort him in troubled times which are bound to be many considering the post he commands.

That smile on her face reveals her pride in her husband’s success. It also gives the world a message – don’t mess with him.  Both have gone through periods when life had not been very just to either of them. Yet today, they stand tall really having a ball telling the world that things will be fine. If we could do it so can you. Obama is stated to have said about his wife, “There’s something about her that projects such honesty and strength. It’s what makes her such an unbelievable professional, and partner, and mother, and wife.”

What more would a woman want from her husband?

  1. Right Shail. I admire her too. Loved the way she interacted with kids and danced with them. Indeed she is the sweet dancing queen of Obama’s heart who’s won many Indian hearts too this time.

  2. Thanks Shail for highlighting the role of Michelle in the success of Obama. She is equally or more talented than obama. Normally our political leaders do such ‘stunts’ for sake of cameras. But we can see her total involvement in her body language and she spent quality time with kids. I dream of the day when our country will have such young & energetic prime minister / presidents.

Hi Sonal. Yes, Michelle did what she is at best, being her natural self and not over doing anything..

Hi Hari, Thanks for your lovely comments. Yes, political leaders indeed do some ‘stunts’ as you rightly say. But yes, she did make an impression during her trip here to India. I too like millions of Indians and like you await for the day when we can have an energetic and idealistic head of the country. The world runs on hope so all we can do is hope and wait…

  5. There was an article in today’s Mumbai Mirror about how a newborn baby was named Michelle when the First Lady of the United States came here.
Well, yes… have you seen the video of her gracefully joining in dance with the young children?
Superb article, Shail. Love the way you’ve given the women their due, when half the world loves talking only about the men.

P.S. Been waiting for your reply on my comment in your previous article, but it seems nowhere in sight.
    Love,

  6. Dear Shail,
I feel that your language and narration is getting better by the day. There’s a kind of smoothness in the choice of words something akin to a quality kancheepuram silk saree. The day is not far when I am going to queue up to you for your autograph.

And to have written about Michelle Obama, well that’s again a great choice. In December 2008 my publisher almost ordered me to write a 200 page book on Obama. He sent me a truckload of books on Obama and gave me just ten days time. The book entitled Black Gold In White House came out well. It was only then I came to know about Michelle Obama. And with reading your blog on her my perspective has become perfect. Thank you Shail

  7. I almost cried when I read your article, Shail. I admire both of the Obamas so much for taking on the immense jobs they are now doing. It is huge, and now, without the backing of Congress, it will be that much more difficult.
They had to be very brave to put themselves in the spotlight like this. To be the first to do something is a challenge in and of itself. To be the first to take on such positions in the glare of the media (no reflection on you) and in the face of racial prejudice, is more than a challenge. It is a brave and courageous act, and I love the fact that they did it with the best of intentions and with high political aims and personal integrity.
    Thank you

    Hi Sneha,

Firstly, I have been caught up with a lot of things. That’s why I haven’t replied back for many of the comments in my previous article on live-in relationships. Will do so soon.
Coming to the current write-up, yes, it is nice to watch women like Michelle who don’t allow their identities to disappear only because their husbands are in power nor do they permit themselves to misuse the power…

    Dear Sridhar,
Thanks for the lovely compliments. The comparison to a Kancheepuram saree? My oh My! That’s nice to hear:)
This is news to me about your book on Obama. Is it still available? Was it written in English or Tamil. Would like to know.

    Hi Kay,
It is such a pleasure to have you here. Yes, the Obamas are doing some good work but being in power usually tends to drive politicians away from the goals they started with first. I hope this doesn’t happen to Obama.

Hope to see you here often Kay.

  11. Hi Shail,
a good write up at the right time! Obama fever caught up with you too!
Yes, she must have something great in her otherwise she would not be there. I read somewhere that once Obama commented jovially that if shehad not married him, he would not have been the Prez and she the First Lady. It seems that she replied with a mischevous smile ‘You may not have become the Prez but I would have become the First Lady’. Such is her confidence. ANd the way she insists about children having physical activity and healthy food, the mother in her is dominant. And when she stresses the importance of education, the woman-that too a Black one- comes to the fore. She looks natural, she seems to be herself all the time and that makes her beautiful.

  12. Dear shaili, I liked your write-up very much. Please read my message on Muse India. You find Michelle and Barack different, because their roots do not come from Europe. They know the pulse of the developing nations, and have deep regards for India and Indians. Buying so many Indian cottage industry products shows her love for the artesans!
Obama’s reference to Mahatma, tagore and Vivekanand are exemplary. It has been possible because he had befriended my Indians during his college days. Shaili, please post your essays on Muse India, too. Love and regards, Mallick

Hi Varloo, Nice of you to stop by and comment. Yes, being her very own natural self is what stands out in Michelle.

Dear Mallickji, It is such a delight to see you here! Thank you for stopping by and commenting. It is encouraging. Yes, I will definitely post something on Muse too. And also read some of your posts, something I am guilty of not doing….

  15. Dear Shail, thanks for visiting my blog. I agree with your assessment of Michelle Obama. Smart, savvy, kind, great mom, great wife, great WOMAN. I am also committed to buying fairly traded products from India and other countries where jewelry, pottery and more are small businesses, especially for women struggling to feed their families.

    Wonderful writing, Shail. Thanks! Amy

  16. I know Shail, that you would definitely write about Michelle Obamma…as you always look at the ‘person behind every successful person’, isn’t it!
I didn’t have the opportunity to watch the video of her dance, but by the replies here, it shows, Michelle carried herself well enough to have a fan club of her in India..

  17. Very true Bhargavi. The First Lady of The US of A can afford to show off and act as if she is doing a great favor to all those people who she is smiling at! But, Michelle turns out to be almost just like any other woman-wife,mother is something that makes her stand out.

Thanks for the lovely comments Bhargavi.

  18. Rightly said Shail! M. Obama does carry herself well. But I feel a little distressed when the Papparazzi tries to stress more on the First Lady’s fashion statement than her more intellectual and other capabilities!!

  19. Feels refreshed reading your write up about Michelle . I admire the family . But don’t want to be in the group who says hurray to Obama as a fashion . Like the above commentator said I love them because they manage to live as normal human beings and gives out that message .
As you have said Shail , if Michelle Obama can so can we !! Hubby is taking his afternoon nap . May be I should go over and give him some support 😉

    Hi Geeta,

Yes, she is indeed graceful in her movements. But the press and media is really going bonkers with their trying to concentrate on things that don’t usually matter. Trust most of them to do so….

    Thanks for stopping by.
