That Symbol of Inspiration

The bald head,
those branded spherical spectacles,
the white loin cloth and that lean long stick –
we identify so much with all those that symbolized freedom.
Even today, when all seems lost
when law and order is just a line on paper,
when conscience is only a fashionable word
to decorate self help journals,
the brisk steps marching with hope
seem the only way out.
If he could do it without a drop of blood or wounding word
so can we, I think.
If an entire captive nation’s self-respect can be snatched back without malice and mire
so can we retain our self-respect
without resorting to hatred and hurt.
Ideals and values may appear
old-fashioned ideas
but when the boat rocks violently
amidst waves of shallow modern living
these symbols of peace and principle drive us
safely back to the shore.
Remembering the senior citizen
who makes us feel alive
years after he has gone,
Let us live life the way
he always wanted –
simple, joyously and with self-respect.

  1. Thanks Shail for this thought provoking one. Great to find that your blog has more than 80000 hits. Hope your will reach 1 lakh hits soon.

  2. You said it Shail, ‘simple, joyously and with self-respect.’ We have begun to believe that there is joy and respect only in ostentation and therein lies the tragedy. we need the Mahatma to come amongst us again to drill these values into our thick heads.

    1. Hi Zephyr,
Yes, exactly. But the problem is that we keep waiting for a Mahatma when we ourselves in our own little ways can bring about constructive change.

      Thanks for dropping by….

  3. hello Shail ji ,
Very thought provoking poem. The line ‘law and order is just a line on paper’ is very much true as we can see and read every day spontaneous increase in crimes no matter what age or region.
    keep up the good work.

  4. Well without any disrespect to anyone I think we need to Change our way of living.. not sure if I Will like to follow Gandhian principles.. but neverthless we need to change..

A lovely ode to Gandhi for sure . And yeah I do believe in the last line lets start to live a simple joyous and full of self respect life ..

    1. Hi Bikram,
I know. I understand. In today’s kind of rash, fast, frenzy of living we need different kinds of means and ways to make life simple, joyous and self respecting. But, for me, Mahatma Gandhi will always be the inspiration…. Change is definitely needed and we need to initiate the process ourselves in whatever way possible, not waiting for some messiah to come in for our rescue…
      Glad you like the poem….
