Porn, Violence and the City

This post was to be a one theme article on the ministers who wanted to spend their time more constructively in the Karnataka State Assembly watching porn. Unfortunately, by the time I decided to let my thoughts flow and emotions burst out, something more terrifying took place. A murder. In the city. In a private school. By a ninth standard boy. Within the class premises….

What is the world coming to? Coming closer, what is India coming to? Three ministers spend OUR valuable time entertaining themselves watching pornographic pictures in the  state legislature when the assembly and the council are in session. That too when mobiles are not allowed inside! No wonder when the ministers themselves are like this we cannot expect much from the public which most of the time prefers to shut its eyes to injustice than make an effort to reform. Unless of course, it is a hi-funda event like the Lok Pal Bill or Anna Hazare where everyone presumes they are part of some great movement when all that they do is shake flags and fists. Now, don’t get me wrong. I am all for Anna Hazare and the unconditioned support that he got from the masses. But, why don’t we try to bring out changes in our everyday lives? Why don’t we just lead our lives simply and with some values. Surely, we should be having plenty of that considering the fact that everyone’s state of simplicity and definition of values differ from one end of the country to the other?

Today, in Chennai, a 9th Grade student stabbed his teacher to death in the class because he was angry with her for disciplining her. Where does all this anger in a child come from? Ministers, movies, lack of parental supervision and values? I have been a teacher in school but never ever in my wildest of dreams have I ever imagined a child to take to arms. I have been a student but never ever (even when the teacher has been most irritating) have I ever wanted to physically harm her/him.

Where are the good ol’ times? Or, are we creating such situations expecting times to be really bad when there is always scope for improvement?

Suddenly, I want to become that little child once again and wrap my mother’s saree ‘pallu‘ over my head and try to become invisible. And also tag my son along. Suddenly, I want to take that time machine and jump back into the period when life was slow, information little, choices even lesser. When politicians had moral values, when they never had to stand with their heads bent down before their children and grandchildren.

Oh! Lord,  remove the dust off  all the human souls and protect the little children from mental pollution.

Amen!

  1. When politicians had moral values, when they never had to stand with their heads bent down before their children and grandchildren.
So true!! I love the way you brought a connect between the 2 incidents.
And the day politicians had values, kids themselves behaved better, because they were taught better by people around them.

I keep wondering what happens to the tolerance levels of children these days. All values are being replaced by presence of money, and parents who give it to kids to make up for not spending time with them….

  2. well this is what our society is going to and yet we say we are developing and india shining..

its our politcians who have shown the kids how to go about it , the I dont care attitude or I am untouchable..

politicians standing with their head down I doubt if we can remmeber that ever, indian politics has always been a dirty game..

I go now and touch my teachers feet and thank them for making me what i am , i have seen in todays world students arranging plans how to beat a teacher etc …

god knows where we are heading .. but whereever we are heading is sure not a good place to go to …

  3. Dear Shail Ji,
I share your anguish and agree with your outburst at the state of affairs in apna India-politicians who are elected representatives are sadly ” Off The People, Far from the People, and Bye The People” instead of being “Of the people,For the people and By the people ” as is normally expected. The student murdering a teacher in school, speaks of the moral degradation that has spread in our educational system and schools which are supposed to be temples of learning, have become dens of vicious youngsters who can take lives at will without thinking of its pros and cons.Yes,parents are to be blamed to a great extent and the teachers themselves need to be taught about how to instil noble values and lofty ideas in to the young minds in school.I recall that we used to have compulsary Moral Science classes in our school in those days/years (1950s to 1970s) and by grace of God we have valued what we had learnt then till today and in turn passed them on to our children.I join you in your prayer and say AMEN ! once more.

  4. Is this called Kali Yuga? All the political, social and mentality of people make me say in the affirmative to the question for all before now!

  5. Dear Shail
There is no escape in life. No hell exists beneath the earth and no heaven above. It all exists in this five or six foot body of ours. I believe when the hearts of the people are impure, the land becomes impure. But, that same land can become the land of tranquil light once we start undergoing our own Human Revolution or transformation, just as you said. I loved your write-up ‘coz you pointed out the weaknesses within the society and also gave a solution to fight it out. Nothing can change if we do not determine to change ourselves. I am ready, are you? I am willing, are you? If yes, come then let’s take that first step together with unity and harmony and set the rhythm for a new dawn of 21st century. Let’s stand alone where we are right now, don’t worry others will follow.

    Dear Shail,

Frankly, I didn’t find anything great about this song. You might agree that from a musical
point of view it’s a run of the mill effort, without any change of scale or pitch.
Regarding the Karnataka assembly incident, what else can you expect from these bandicoots?
It is our fault that we allow these jokers to inflict themselves on us. They don’t even have a
retirement age. They carry on well past their sell by dates till they drop, because they are
also armed with the LLB degree (Licensed to Loot Bharat). It pays to be in power.
One solution could be to do away with elections and have a stiff competitive exam, like for
the IAS, IFS, NDA, B Schools etc to select people to govern the country. Right now, one can be
illiterate and uncouth, but if one has money and paid louts, one can win elections.

    Regards
    Gora

  8. I like the last para of your article the most. Even I want to go back to those “primitive” days when knowledge was inherited from elders and information more gentle on our nerves. Perhaps its one of the negative dimension of globalization wherein we are flooded with too much of information and cannot sift the good from the bad. Perhaps its our sky high aspirations which are making us lesser and lesser tolerant and more and more aggressive ( the word nowadays is competitive).

We do not know what is there in store for us in future. Perhaps worse or may be something better emerging out of this quagmire of social & ideological degeneration. Let’s hope for the best and be prepared for the worst.

  9. Thanks Shail for this article highlighing the attitude of our politicians. It was really shocking to read statements defending their action. Ex CM asked is it a crime to just watch porn. He also asked the reporter if he is not watching porn at his house. Very few people condemned these statements. Really disturbing to see this trend…
