A Sister: A Bit of Childhood That Is Never Lost

Sister, one needs to have a sister to know how important a role she plays in our lives. Boys and girls will vouch for the presence of a sister in their lives. Love them or hate them. But you can’t just ignore them. Right? Growing up together with a sister can be a real rocking experience depending on whether she really rocked you in your cradle or knocked you over! But, whatever said and done, A Sister is A Sister!

For the boys, Raksha Bandhan seems the right time, to make amends or please their big or little sister. That bond of siblings is tightened on this day and the sisters vow to make the best out of this opportunity. Leaving jokes aside, nothing quite beats the presence of a sister in one’s life whether you are fighting over silly things or laughing over stupid jokes, life with a sister is not something that can be easily forgotten. Even when the sister is married, her presence still pervades the house. Each nook and corner reminds you of things that were so obstinately dear to you then, way back and so valuable now. A sister personifies memories – good or bad, happy or sad, foolish or wise. Sometimes, when the whole world seems ready to pounce upon you, only a sister is that soothing balm that is willing to hear you out irrespective of whether you are right or wrong. When you get into trouble, and by that I mean serious trouble then, it is usually the sister who bails you out. Of course, for the little innumerable goof-ups she is always there to see that you get a firing or a spanking!

“A sister is both your mirror – and your opposite.”

How very true. When you see her you know what you are inside out. You can’t fool her. It is a different fact that it is her prerogative to reveal this or not. You won’t deny that fact that you would love teasing your sister, pulling her pigtails or teasing her about a probable boyfriend. In the same way, don’t you squirm when she pulls your legs about something that is embarrassing to you before the others or coolly takes your share of those goodies you like so much! It is not very difficult to please a sister though whether or not she lives with you. She is a relationship you cannot deny at least not in this incarnation of yours!

Every once in a while:

v      Get together and recollect the past over coffee or a pizza. Have a whale just remembering how you both messed up with each other.

v      Send her a card or a gift to show that she does matter in your life (whether that is true or not is your choice of thought).

v      Just chat once in a while over phone or online. Surely, a few minutes will not take away valuable minutes of your lifetime.

All this because nobody has seen tomorrow. So do today so that you don’t have regrets tomorrow.

Sister’s Day is celebrated just for this, to make that smile magically appear on your sister’s lips. Today is the day, a day to express your acknowledgment and appreciation to your sister. So, go ahead and make your sister’s day. She is like someone said,

““A sister is a gift from God, sent from above to make life worthwhile here below.””

Happy Sister’s Day!

  1. You are right, Shail. Sister is a spy at home and a CID too to find the secret for you when you are wronged. A sister gives the best definition of true love… sister is one who cares, who looks after and who gives a hug for a success.

  2. Thanks Shail for making this timely posting.Your posting helped me to recollect several incidents when my sister helped me to solve various problems. My sisters played a BIG role in shaping up my personality. They take up the role of mother when situation demands. Sisters help in overcoming many problems in a ‘tactful’ way. Sisters help to a great extent in learning the need for ‘give & take’ for success in life.

  3. Hey Shail! Have always yearned for a sister. I’m the only child…
Honestly didn’t get the bonding with anyone else.
Excellent post and your words are in such an effortless flow.

  4. You write about ‘sisters’ today and my sis has been occupying my thoughts quite intensively for the past couple of years for various reasons. Anyways, blessed are those to have a loving sister. These days, I have some very good and kind hearted friends who have filled the role of sister for me.

Not having brothers and having two daughters, I think a sister is a precious friend given to us by Him. How and what happens to this relationship is ruled by one’s fate, ofcourse!

This is a timely article noting that Raksha Bandan is just round the corner.:) Well written like only Shail can!

  5. Shail,
I don’t have a sister or a brother..but can see what all you had mentioned here…through my children, through their complaints and compliments for each other.
I consider my cousins and online friends as my sisters.
    Happy Sister’s Day!

    Hi Hari,

I know, nothing can replace or substitute the place of sisters. And only those who have sisters can truly understand what that means. Of course, those not having sisters can sometimes guess what they miss out on seeing their friends with sisters!

    Hi Sneha,

Thanks. Sometimes, when one does not have a real sister then, someone along the way fills the gap if the desire is intense to get sisterly affection. I know of many persons who have unrelated sisters and their love and affection is to be felt to be understood. Maybe, the same might come up for you someday!

    Hi Sujata,
What a delight to see you here! True, the relationship depends. Just having a sister does not suffice. And as you rightly say, some friends can so effortlessly slip into the groove of sister without us knowing, giving us all the joys that only a true sister could.

Nice that you visited here Sujata and also, nice that you liked the article.

    Hi Bhargavi,

I understand. What we don’t get, we see in others and relish or regret. It’s nice that you consider your online friends to be your sisters. It’s not easy to do that. Because, being a sister in real life is a different ball game altogether!

  11. Dear Shail,
how true! I have a elder sister who spent 14 years of her prime life in earning for us siblings without a murmur. Now she is somewhat a cynic but I forgive her behaviour as she had sacrificed so much for us.
And I lost my younger sister 13 years ago, she was a replica of me. I love her very much and do not eat icecream after her death because she was mad about ice cream.
Blessed are those who has atleast one sister!

Varloo, I can understand fully about your feelings and emotion about your sisters. No two sisters think alike but whatever may transpire between them, they are sisters for life.
I share your grief with you and hope that you always remember the happy memories with your sisters!

  13. dear shail, I know nothing can substitute the place of sister.MY akka was a big spy and my boss.I was always scared of her. When I entered in my teens ,we became good friends. She was my guid, leader and my mentor. After marriage we became very busy in our world, but whenever we met enjoyed thoroughly Recently I had been to Banglore for a day i came to know about her health so i stayed back there ,looked after her and sunday only returned back from Banglore. We had wonderful time together.

  14. Dear Laxmi,

I know nothing can replace a sister ever. It’s very nice that you were able to be beside your sister when she needed you. Not all are able to do that. And some really have a sibling rivalry till the very end. That’s sad. Because not all are fortunate to have siblings or sisters.
Hope and pray that your beautiful relationship with your sister stays till the very end.
