Friendship

Happy Friendship Day. Everyday!

Wow! It’s that day of the year again when we let our friends know just how much they mean to us! It’s that special day when we celebrate friendship. Ages ago, such a concept did not even exist. We made friends, stuck around together and that was sufficient to let our friends know that we valued them immensely. But, new concepts are bound to make a global trip, the friendship day concept popped into India as well bringing in a unique way of appreciating friends not to mention the gifts, the cards, the friendship bands and the like!

Leaving aside the idea of ‘friendship day’ tell me, doesn’t it feel good to have a friend, a confidant who shares your little joys and sorrows, however monotonous and boring, imagined or overrated? Many a time, I have found myself rattling away my problem to a friend only to discover much later that I had forgotten to ask about the problem that my friend had mentioned some days back. I have even rung back sheepishly only to be told, “What’s all that formality about man? When you were speaking to me, you didn’t even realize that I found a solution to my problem.” Now, that’s a real friend!

Of course, people’s idea or definition of a friend differs. For some it could be a huge bunch of people enjoying, sharing, teasing or going out together. For some, just a small group of friends will do with whom they hang out. There are still others who are content with a friend or two, guarding their privacy like hell. I remember way back, sorting out people as far as relationships were concerned, something my friends will vouch for even today! Just as not all could be strangers, not all could be friends either. Of course, a smile was ever ready for anyone who cared to acknowledge your presence. So, there were acquaintances – people who you met occasionally – the ‘Hi!’ ‘Bye’ kind. Then, there were the close acquaintances –the kind who you met frequently and who shared their views with you as you did with them at times. That’s about it. Then there were friends, persons with whom you had a wale of a time, with whom you could chat away but even with these your closest secrets remained just that – secret! Finally, there were close friends, your soul mates so to say with whom nothing was hidden, not school, not college, not work, not family. They advised you and you advised them. You had no self defenses before them. They just let you be YOU! They were God’s gift to you!

Sometimes I wonder. Do we need a special day just for friends? Don’t we show them that they are an important part of our lives every other day? But, do we? Sometimes, the ravages of time take you far away from the very friends who you considered close to your heart. So, I suppose a day to celebrate friendship, to let your friend know that he/she is not taken for granted becomes a convenient modern day requirement – more of a priority reminder!

Here’s a special  something for that special relationship called friendship.

Friendship –
no small thing.
A journey of little joys
on many a bumpy road
definitely not in an expensive Ford!
Just walks along the beaten path
sometimes hurried to reach a place,
sometimes at a leisurely pace.
Strolling on a rainbow across the sky
spreading our wings, ready to fly.
Distance and time just temporary barriers,
not a hindrant to pursue a friendship
blessed by the Power Above to survive
through the maze called life.

Walking hand in hand
for long can take a toll
on any relationship, blood related or not
but, not this one
as two friends enrich their lives
sharing emotions and reflections,
talking, chatting, arguing and loving.
The little fancies of teenage life
floating on a cloud sometimes,
landing on the ground with a thud at times
maturing jnto an association
that spreads across time
ready to take on the world
with just trust in hand.

I wonder, as each day strengthens our bond,
‘Is it some magic wand
that brought us together?’
‘Or, some previous incarnation connection?’
I know not,
I only savor our faith in each other
just as you do, I know.
I treasure
the beautiful threads of love
that bind us with tender joy
like a surprise gift wrapped
with a sprinkling of stars
to brighten the path ahead.
God Bless You, Dear Friend

Just wishing that all of us sail in the boat of friendship with positive and genuine friends and do not permit the waves of indifference and circumstance to ever let the boat of friendship drown.

Happy Friendship Day!

  1. Hi Shail.

Personally, I’ve always been a loner as I quite like it that way. I’ve just one close friend – my ‘soulmate’ in many senses, and now he’s soon going to be a life partner too. Of course, I love brightening up others days and making them feel how special life is. Friendship is indeed special and its the warm gestures that friends make. I do not quite enjoy the friendship day phenomenon, as I feel its only Archies and other retailers who laugh the way to the bank.
Anyway, here’s to what frienship is.

  2. I mis-spelt friendship! Anyway, also just wanted to add – May you win the contests ! Your post totally deserves it. The poem is truly apt and well written too. Thanks.

The best part is having friends to whom you dont need wish this day at all…. 🙂 You are anyway appreciating each other and being in touch thru all the other days, then something like friendship’s day becomes meaningless in context…

  4. Wishing you the same Shail!!

It is a blessing if one can really find a friend to share everything.

  5. Very interesting one on friendship Shail. It is very difficult nowadays to identify a ‘good’ friend who helps without any expectations. Friendship day helps us to remind the value of our true friends. Even many close relatives have become very selfish and are unable to spare time to help their relatives even during a crisis. Only close friends rush to help during any emergency.

  6. I read it some where,

Friends are God’s way of appologizing for relatives. 🙂

Just wondering is Friendship and friend just words or statuses that can be bestowed so lightly… We may share ocassional cup of coffee or meet for movies and nothing intimate or heart to heart. Will it be friendship? Friendship is a purposive association , two or more people come together with a purpose and some needs. Each takes a role and if needs are met they stick around or go aead to look for new pastures…

Who could we actually call a friend? I keep pondering on this ontological dilemma…

Celebrating friends every where every day…
    Peace,

    Desi Girl

  7. Belated wishes on the Friendship Day, Shail!
All the best for winning the contest!

I agree with you 100% on friends…there is no second opinion..
Just as we had started to celebrate Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and the like, Friendship Day is among them too…to remind us the importance of that relationship in this rat race world!

    Hi Sneha,

I agree too. But sometimes, especially in today’s modern world where are too many negative vibrations out there, sometimes it becomes necessary for people to celebrate even if it something like friendship. What do you say? Of course, all may not follow this in life. But that’s how it is…
Anyway, here’s to what frienship is.

    Hi Sneha,

Thanks for the good wishes. I hope so too. Let’s wait and watch. Even if I don’t, I know that I would have wished lots of people through my blog. What say?

    Hi Ashwathy,
Right you are. Real friends don’t need a friendship day. But that is how it is today, with people leading jam packed lives. Sometimes, they leave lots of genuine fun loving friends behind. Such days maybe, in a sort of way try to serve as gentle reminders. Don’t you think so?

    Hi Shree,

It is indeed a blessing to have a good friend or good, genuine friends in life. They are like no other relationship and are God’s gift to us.

    Hi Hari,

Nice you liked the article. Yes, good friends are hard to find. Sometimes, they will be right under our very noses and we don’t see them. Unconditional friendship is indeed a real blessing.

    Hi V,

Friendship is understood only by those who can be real friends and who have real friends. Agreed, that both sides share certain needs and requirements. But all friendships are not conditional. The person with whom you share your joys and sorrows without having to edit anything – now, that is a real friend. With a real friend you don’t have to worry that what you share goes elsewhere – he/she is always a true confidant for life. It all may sound idealized but it is true. I talk from experience!:))

    Hi Bhargavi,
Thanks for the good wishes. There must be many good writers having written something on friendship. Maybe, if my post surpasses them, then I can get a prize. All the same, I am happy that I am able to wish people through my article!

Yes, it is all a phenomenon but the existence of nice and true friendships is indeed a reality.

  15. You are a very good Poet Shail.I always admire good English but rarely do I read poems. But I enjoyed the poem which you wrote.

I have read very few poems since those school days of William Blake, Tennyson, Milton – which were compulsory and I had to read them by heart. After that, whatever I came across would not have been in simple (plain) English. Yours was clear and not boring.

  16. Thanks a lot, Shail. It’s really a blessing to have a friend like you. Happy Friendship day.

  17. Nice blog, Shail. Sometimes when you are out of touch with friends, Friendship Day is a good reminder to call them and let them know how much the friendship means to you!

  18. Hi Beyni,

Thanks. I agree. Even though I am not exactly in favour of days which were made up only for commercial benefit I still feel that they are a nice way as you put it to remind people to let their friends know that they care for them (time or no time).

  19. Nice blog Shail, I really liked the part of ranting about the problem and then calling back. Had done it so many times. And I know a set of three who were like iron fort, nothing of their business had gone past them. I tried harder but still, was not able to become their confidante. And I know they are friends for 20 years now.. Great blog and a very nice fitting poem. Sorry for the long comment 🙂 All the best for the contest

  23. Everybody spends time with their friends and exchange gifts and cards expressing their love and affection. You can find numerous cards and gifts for friendship on the Web and in gift stores.

These days, personalized gifts and greetings are in vogue which are easily available at online stores like ‘Post My Greetings’.
